Putting Others First

There are a lot of ill informed views about the childfree and the accompanying lifestyle. There are accusations of selfishness and the ever present implication that those who don’t want children have some sort of personality defect.

The negative bias against the childfree as uncaring or incapable of love is wholly inaccurate. If you only look around there is plenty of evidence of the childfree giving their time and skills to others in the community and the environment.

Camilla Batmanghelidjh – Psychotherapist

Batmanghelidj is the founder of Kids Company Charity in Hackney East London, a project she set up for children who experience significant psychosocial difficulties. Kids Company’s policy is that even the most disturbed child can recover as they weren’t born a criminal or a killer. The organization provides a cornerstone for children so that they stay out of the social services care and criminal justice system.

Kids Company successfully gets children back in school, and then off to college and eventually university. It’s through Camilla tireless work that she empowers children to fulfil their potential.

Kids Company success involves touring youth productions to National Youth Theatre in West End. Ms Batmanghelidjh has been on UK television over the years gaining support for the project, as well has campaigning for secure funding to continue the project.

Batmanghelidjh’s portrait hangs in the prestigious National Portrait Gallery in the West End of London. She was honoured with a MBE from Elizabeth II Queen of England, for her services to children.

Daryl Hannah – Actress, Environmental Activist

While most of us engage in activities that destroys our planets resources, Daryl Hannah dedicates her time and energy campaigning to save the environment. She promotes eco-friendly forms of living and energy production. She also fights for the less fortunate going so far as to chained herself to a walnut tree at the South Central Farm for three weeks to protest the farmers’ eviction by the property’s new owner.Even though she has no children, Hanna is preserving the planet for future generations.

Oprah Winfrey – Television Host, Producer

Winfrey is a media mogul with her own chat show, magazine, and television network. Many credit her with putting current United States President Barak Obama on the national radar. Winfrey participates in many philanthropist works. She started her own academy for girls in South Africa and helped 250 African-American men continue or complete their education at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia among other activities. She has also never married her long-time romantic partner becoming a very public face for opted out of the life script.

Mary Seacole – Nurse

Sometimes known as Mother Mary, Seacole was a nurse who set up boarding houses and hospitals in Panama and Crimea to assist her in treating the sick. She cared for over 4,000 sick and dying soldiers in during the Crimean War. She us famous for treating battlefield wounded and nursing wounded solders on both sides while under fire.

She is noted for her bravery and medical skills and as a woman who succeeded despite the racial prejudice. Seacole is an honoured figure in black history. The BBC television channel made a film on Mary Seacole life whaich was featured in British black history month.
